Costas Piladakis, chairman of Larissa, was elected president of Greek soccer’s Super League for the next two years on Thursday. He takes over from Panathinaikos’s main shareholder Yiannis Vardinoyiannis. He secured 15 votes out of 16, being the sole candidate for the post following the withdrawal of Panserraikos president Petros Theodoridis. The vice president’s position has been abolished and the new alternate president is Asteras Tripolis’s Giorgos Borovilos. Piladakis announced that the draw for the new season will take place on July 15 in Thessaloniki, with the kickoff set for late August.

Greece’s beach volleyball pair Vasso Karadassiou and Vicky Arvaniti could not enter the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament in Moscow as they lost yesterday to their German opponents Rieke Brink-Abeler and Hella Jurich 2-0 (21-19, 22-20). They finished ninth and collected an $8,000 prize. They have now returned to Greece and will be competing in this weekend’s Greek Masters tournament at Roda Beach in Corfu, going straight to the semifinals of the competition.

Marcos Baghdatis has caused a stir in his home country after informing the Cyprus Tennis Federation (CTF) he will not be representing the island in the Davis Cup games against Portugal between July 18 and 20. Having previously knocked out Slovenia, Cyprus, who rely almost entirely on the prowess of Baghdatis when they compete in the Davis Cup, will take on favorites Portugal, with a place in the Europe/Africa Zone Group 1 up for grabs. Italian goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino will not have to return to AEK after all as Chievo Verona will repatriate him by borrowing the player for one year. Sorrentino had been desperate to return to Italy but still has a contract with the Greek Super League side.

Olympiakos volleyball club has made a half-million-euro offer to one of Europe’s best players, Serb Ivan Miljkovic. The 29-year-old opposite would tip the balance in Greek volleyball if he came, but reports suggest Italian club Modena is also on his trail.
