PAOK set to ink deal with Dejan Tomasevic
Former Panathinaikos center Dejan Tomasevic has agreed to continue his career at PAOK basketball club. The 35-year-old Serb is expected to arrive in Thessaloniki today for a medical test and to sign his contract. The high-profile transfer will strengthen the Thessaloniki team considerably, although his physical condition remains questionable. He stated he wanted to remain in Greece and that he trusts the new ownership of the northern club. Daniilidou to face Ivanova at Vogue Open Ekaterina Ivanova of Russia will be Greek tennis champion Lena Daniilidou's first opponent today at the Vogue Athens Open at the Athens Tennis Club. The main part of the $125,000 tournament for women gets under way today, with another Greek star, Anna Gerasimou, facing Estonia's Maret Ani. Matches begin at 10 a.m. Doukas victory Handball champion Doukas scored an emphatic 35-23 home win in the first leg of the Champions League qualifier against Estonia's Polva Serviti, taking a huge step toward making the second round. Athens team Doukas led by just one goal at halftime (14-13), but crushed the visitors in the second half. If the Greeks advance they will face European champion Real Madrid in the second round. Basketball strike The draw for the Greek Cup in basketball is scheduled for Wednesday, however it remains unknown whether the first round will take place due to the strike by the union of professional basketball players (PSAK). The union is protesting about various problems the players face and has asked its members to abstain from the cup's first round ties. Volleyed out The women's national volleyball team was eliminated yesterday from the finals of the 2009 European Championship after going down 3-0 in Azerbaijan. Greece had needed an away win to qualify. PAO ground Work begins today on the new Panathinaikos sports complex at Votanikos, western Athens. The club has obtained the permit to begin digging at the site, although the master plan is yet to be approved.
