Olympiakos to acquire Vujcic from Maccabi

Olympiakos basketball club has reportedly reached an agreement to buy Croatian international Nikola Vujcic from Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv for about 1.2 million euros. At 2.11 meters, the 30-year-old is an excellent center who has already won the Euroleague twice (2004 and 2005). The Croat is set to strengthen the Greek league runners-up considerably on their front line. Olympiakos is now turning its attention to Greece international guard Theodoris Papaloukas, who is considering leaving his club in Russia, CSKA Moscow.

AEK sign Argentinean striker Nacho Scocco

AEK has completed the transfer of Argentine soccer player Ignacio (Nacho) Scocco from Mexico’s Pumas UNAM. The 23-year-old striker stated he is “coming to one of the best clubs in Europe.” He has signed a three-year contract to become the fifth player from Argentina at AEK. The club’s next targets are Angelos Basinas of Real Mallorca and Michalis Constantinou, who recently left Olympiakos.

Handball elimination

The 32-31 win of the men’s national handball team over Spain in the second leg of the World Championship playoff in Drama was not enough to overturn the eight-goal deficit from the first leg, meaning Spain has made it to the finals.

Second chance

The women’s national volleyball team finished second in the qualifying group for the 2009 European championship and will need to beat Azerbaijan in a two-leg playoff in September to advance to the finals. In the crucial match on Sunday, Greece lost 3-1 to Turkey.

One win out of three

In the first round of Group A of the men’s European Volleyball League held over the weekend in Slovakia, Greece had one win and two losses. The depleted national squad lost to the Netherlands (3-2) and Slovakia (3-0) and beat Great Britain (3-0).

World League loss

The national water polo team lost 10-9 to powerhouse Serbia yesterday in the opening game of the World League.
