PAOK signs Chilean star from Portugal

Chile international defender Pablo Contreras has moved to PAOK Thessaloniki, after signing a contract for the next two years. The 29-year-old soccer player, who played last season in Portugal’s Sporting Braga, has been capped 41 times. PAOK also signed a two-year contract with former Aris player Vladan Ivic, who stated that the club has got to be in the country’s top four.

Greek horse riders win medals in Sofia

Greek riders returned from Sofia’s World Cup in equestrian show jumping with six medals. Katerina Doubodel won a gold and a bronze; Elina Dendrinou won one gold and Antonis Petris won two silver medals and a bronze. Greece’s Mega Sports riding club is hosting the 2nd Mega Grand Prix in show jumping from today until Sunday.

Boxed in

Boxer Tassos Berdesis has earned a spot at the Beijing Olympics after the international boxing federation banned Ukraine’s Ismail Sillakh for a doping offense. Berdesis has become the third Greek boxer to ensure qualification to the 2008 Olympic Games.

Sernioti is off

The Panathinaikos volleyball club decided to abandon the effort to acquire Italian coach Roberto Serniotti after he failed to return a signed contract for over a month, according to the Greek Cup winners. They are now beginning a new search for a coach. Former Olympiakos coach Sotiris Drikos is taking over at Kifissia.

Andros sea race

Costas Manthos with his boat Erytos II Cosmote was the winner in the ORC International category of the Andros sailing race. In the IRC category winner was Yiannis Koutsoukos, with the Albireo-Lloyd’s Register boat.

Egypt sunk

The men’s national water polo team got its first World League win yesterday, downing the weak team of Egypt 14-2 on the second day of the competition’s finals in Italy.
