Olympiakos is set to unveil Temuri Ketsbaia as its new soccer coach this afternoon. The champions announced Friday they are to hold a board meeting at 1 p.m. today, to be followed at 2.30 by a press conference by President Sokratis Kokkalis. He is also expected to speak out about dropping Ernesto Valverde and explain why he has chosen Ketsbaia, despite opposition by hardcore fans. The board meeting will also discuss the club’s planned share capital increase.

PAOK has just won the Greek handball league for the first time in its history. In what was dubbed as the final of the championship, PAOK defeated Panellinios 18-16 on Saturday at its home court of Mikra to top the standings after the last round of the playoffs. Panellinios finished second, three points behind PAOK. Diomidis Argous is third and Thermaikos fourth. This was the first time a team from Thessaloniki has managed to win the league crown and break the strength of Athens and Veria.

Olympiakos and Panionios will contest the best-of-five final series for the Greek league title. Olympiakos dismissed NE Patron 16-4 in Game 2 of the semifinal series, while Panionios downed Vouliagmeni 8-6. It’s the first league final in Panionios’s history, while Olympiakos is the holder of the title. The finals begin on Wednesday.

US reports suggest that Greek-American basketball star Nick Calathes is likely to move to European champion Panathinaikos this summer, having enjoyed a great season in the NCAA with the University of Florida. He was deemed one of the best guards in the NCAA this year. Nick’s brother, Pat, plays for Maroussi.

The women’s national volleyball team has suffered two defeats to Serbia in as many games in Belgrade in the first round of matches for the European League. Serbia beat coach George Lykoudis’s women 3-0 on Saturday and 3-1 last night.
