Survivors mark anniversary of torture camp’s dismantlement

OMARSKA (AFP) - Two-thousand survivors of a notorious wartime Serb-run torture camp and their relatives marked the 14th anniversary of its dismantlement in Bosnia yesterday. More than 3,000 Bosnian Muslims and Croats from the northwestern city of Prijedor were forced from their homes by Bosnian Serbs and detained in hellish conditions in the Omarska camp, set up in an old mine. Many died. Relatives of prisoners who were killed and survivors walked through buildings in Omarska mine, which was used between May and August 1992 as a detention camp, and laid wreaths for their loved ones.

Golden dagger from 3000 BC found in Thracian tomb

SOFIA (Reuters) - A golden dagger dating to 3000 BC, plus 500 golden ornaments, have been found in a Thracian tomb in central Bulgaria, an archaeologist said yesterday. “It’s a really sensational discovery,” Bozhidar Dimitrov, head of the Bulgarian National Museum, told Reuters. “The dagger, which we believe is made of gold and platinum, most probably belonged to a Thracian ruler or to a priest.” He said the 16-centimeter (6.3-inch) dagger had been dated to 3000 BC, was in perfect condition and is extremely sharp.

Soldiers killed

Gunmen fired on a military vehicle in northeast Turkey yesterday, causing an accident that killed four soldiers, the state-owned Anatolia news agency reported. The soldiers were killed on a road near the town of Siran, in Gumushane province, when the driver lost control in the shooting and the vehicle overturned, Governor Veysel Dalmaz told Anatolia. Three other soldiers were injured, Dalmaz said. (AP)

Visit

Saudi King Abdullah will start a three-day official visit to Turkey tomorrow during which a military cooperation accord will be signed with Ankara, a Saudi-owned newspaper reported Saturday. During Abdullah’s visit to Ankara at the invitation of Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, six bilateral accords will be signed, including one on military cooperation and another to protect investments, the pan-Arab Al-Hayat said. A 45-strong team of Saudi businessmen will be among the delegation accompanying Abdullah to Turkey, it said. Talks will also focus on the Lebanon conflict and other regional issues. (AFP)
