Six drown as migrant ship sinks off Turkey’s coast

ANKARA (AFP) - Six people drowned and five others were missing after a boat carrying illegal immigrants, mostly Afghans, sank off Turkey's Aegean coast, officials said yesterday. The boat, which was believed to be making for the Greek islands, sank overnight about 100 meters offshore of the western province of Izmir, local sub-governor Sahin Bayhan told AFP by telephone. Forty-five survivors swam to shore and the coast guard was searching for five other people reported missing, he said. The Turkish captain, who was among the survivors, was detained, along with the owner of the vessel, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Bosnia's stock of grain may run out in two weeks

SARAJEVO (AP) - Bosnians rushed to the stores yesterday to buy flour after officials announced the country's wheat stock may run out in two weeks. Bread and flour producers said drought destroyed 30 to 40 percent of local crops and additional imports were necessary, but neighboring countries - from which Bosnia mainly imports - do not have enough for themselves. «The situation is so alarming that some regions of Bosnia-Herzegovina may run out of bread,» warned Miroslav Cosic, who represents flour producers in Bosnia's Chamber of Commerce.

Headscarf remake

A Vienna-based stylist is to redesign the wardrobe of the wife of Turkish presidential aspirant Abdullah Gul, including her Islamic headscarf which upsets secularists. «Hayrunnisa Gul has asked me to redesign her headscarf along with her whole wardrobe in a style that suits everyone, from the most modern to the most conservative,» Atil Kutoglu told AFP yesterday. «I am to submit next week a range of around 10 samples combining Hollywood glamour with the seriousness that matches her position,» he said in a telephone interview from Turkey. Turkish-born Kutoglu's clients include Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and supermodel Naomi Campbell. (AFP)

Heroin haul

Bulgarian customs officers have seized 49.6 kilograms of heroin on the border with Turkey estimated to be worth some 4.4 million levs ($3 million). The drugs were hidden in a secret compartment in a Romanian-registered truck, which was driven by a Turk, the customs office said yesterday. (Reuters)

Prison transfer

Turkish authorities yesterday moved the man who tried to kill Pope John Paul II in 1981 to an Ankara high-security prison from a jail in Istanbul, relatives said. Mehmet Ali Agca, 49, had been jailed in Istanbul since his extradition from Italy in 2000, where he served 19 years for the assassination attempt. He requested to be moved to the eastern city of Malatya, where his family lives, but authorities would only move him to Ankara, about 700 kilometers (435 miles) northwest of his native city, his brother Adnan told AFP. Agca was brought to the prison in the capital under tight security, the Anatolia news agency reported. (AFP)
