Fatal explosion at Turkish barracks caused by gas
DIYARBAKIR (Reuters) - An explosion at a military barracks in southeast Turkey on Saturday which killed four soldiers was caused by gas, the provincial governor told reporters. Separately, Turkish media reported a bomb exploded in the western port city of Izmir on Friday night, injuring four people. The explosion in the barracks in the southeastern province of Van also injured 11 soldiers. Land mine explosion in Turkey kills child, harms 3 ANKARA (AP) - A land mine explosion killed a child and injured three others in southeast Turkey on Sunday, the government-run Anatolia news agency reported. The mine went off near the town of Genc, in the province of Bingol, Anatolia said. It said the mine had been placed by Kurdish rebels. A military helicopter flew the children to a nearby hospital for treatment, the agency said but gave no other details. The private Dogan news agency said the children had been gathering wood when the mine went off. Srebrenica appeal Prosecutors at the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague will appeal the two-year sentence handed down to Naser Oric, the former Muslim commander of Srebrenica over the mistreatment of Serbs, a spokesman told AFP yesterday. Exactly a month ago the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) sentenced Oric to two years for war crimes, but ordered his immediate release since he had already been in custody for more than three years. (AFP) Political protest A bomb exploded outside an office of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) yesterday, state news agency Anatolia reported. The percussion bomb shattered windows at the AKP offices in the southeastern city of Gaziantep but the office was closed and no one was killed or injured, Anatolia said. Local police could not confirm the report and no one from the party was available to comment. The bombing was the latest of three attacks this month on ruling party offices. (Reuters)
