Anarchist bank robber on trial

The trial of 23-year-old Giorgos Voutsis-Vogiatzis, a self-styled anarchist and son of Synaspismos Left Coalition politician Nikos Voutsis, began yesterday, as arsonists continued to strike targets in sympathy. A group calling itself the «Criminals of Thought and Action» claimed responsibility for planting an incendiary device outside two banks in the western suburb of Peristeri yesterday. The group dropped leaflets saying the attack was carried out in sympathy for Voutsis-Vogiatzis. It was the third night in a row that arsonists struck in Athens. Meanwhile, Voutsis-Vogiatzis yesterday admitted to robbing a National Bank branch in Gyzi, central Athens, in October 2007 but denied that he intended to use the hand grenade which was found in his possession when he was caught red-handed. His father told the court that he respected his son’s choices even though he did not agree with them.
