Reds have hired Dusan Ivkovic

Olympiakos confirmed on Saturday the hiring of Serb coach Dusan Ivkovic, who is returning to the Reds after 11 years. «The Olympiakos basketball club is announcing its agreement with Dusan Ivkovic. The Serb coach will take over at our team for the next two years,» read the club’s statement. Ivkovic is succeeding Panayiotis Giannakis, who left after failing to win the Greek league despite having won the Greek Cup and leading Olympiakos to the Euroleague final. The announcement sealed a month’s negotiation with the current coach of the national team of Serbia, who in 1997 led Olympiakos to an unprecedented treble, including the Reds’ sole Euroleague crown. In Greece, Ivkovic has worked at Aris, PAOK, Panionios and AEK and since 2008 he has also been the national coach of Serbia, a post he will retain along with his job at Olympiakos through 2012. The hiring of Ivkovic was essential, if a little late, to Olympiakos’s planning for the new season, given that most teams in Europe have already begun filling their rosters and the Reds will need to hurry to catch up with them, while the national teams are beginning their preparation for the 2010 World Championship in Turkey next month. Olympiakos has also asked to use the Elliniko basketball court for its home games instead of the Peace and Friendship Stadium in Neo Faliro, following a dispute with the administration of the latter arena.
