January-July budget surplus jumps to 2.08 billion euros

Greece’s state budget achieved a primary budget surplus of 2.08 billion euros in the first seven months of the year, more than double the planned 929 million euros, but investments and tax refunds were well below target, according to the Finance Ministry’s preliminary budget execution bulletin published on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos on Tuesday sought to quell concerns over a possible spillover effect from Turkey’s deepening economic crisis, saying problems in the neighboring country will not affect Greece’s “clean exit” from its third bailout program on August 21.

Leading Greek-American organization hails halt of F-35 sale to Turkey

The Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), one of the most influential Greek American organizations and the one that led the effort to block the transfer of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, has praised the signing into law of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 (NDAA) which in part halts the transfer of F-35s to an increasingly unstable and unreliable Turkish government.
