Maria Katsounaki was born in Athens in 1959. She studied Public Law and Political Science at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She started working within the realm of journalism in 1984, initially for the newspaper “Ethnos” and in 1987 moved to Kathimerini. She delved deeply into cultural reporting, assuming the role of Head of the Arts and Culture desk for the daily edition from 1992 till 2007. In parallel, she focused on cinema criticism and op-eds. From 2000 and for a total of 12 years she was also the main presenter of a show on Greek public television (ERT1) which focused on Greek cinema and featured movies and interviews of some of the most prominent Greek filmmakers, including Kakogiannis, Koundouros, Angelopoulos and Lanthimos. In 2007 she received an award by the Botsi Foundation for her continuous work in promoting the arts and culture through her trajectory in the press.
The new school year started this week. The youngsters are anxious but happy, while their parents are mostly frustrated. They know that the struggle related to extracurricular lessons, which range from basic skills such as foreign languages to more sophisticated knowledge, is about to start and will intensify through the last years of elementary school.
