Greek census underway
More than 50,000 people will on Tuesday begin visiting thousands of Greek homes as part of the country?s first census for 10 years in a process that will last two weeks.
The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) said that it has hired 55,000 people to help it carry out the census, which will involve employees carrying identification and wearing special badges visiting households around the country over the next two weeks.
Each visit should last no more than half an hour. During that time, residents will be asked details about their home, such as its year of construction and its size, as well as about themselves. The latter questions will included ones about the interviewee?s age and education. New questions, such as ones about Internet access and the home?s energy sources have been added to the questionnaire for this census.
If people are not home when the statisticians call, they will be left a card with the details they need to arrange an appointment. ELSTAT said it would not be applying the law that allows people who do not cooperate with census officials to be fined up to 50,000 euros.
