Bailout investigation to go to Parliament

The strong indications that political figures may be implicated in the case regarding Greece’s recourse to a financial bailout in 2010 by the George Papandreou government forced the two economic prosecutors on Wednesday to stop investigating the case opened after the statements by Greece’s IMF representative at the time, and to forward it to the Supreme Court.

Prosecutors Grigoris Peponis and Panayiotis Mouzakitis have heard the testimony of former Greek representative in the International Monetary Fund Panayiotis Roumeliotis — whose statements about the Greek bailout program being doomed to fail from the start have triggered the investigation — as well as of former PASOK ministers Louka Katseli and Gerasimos Arsenis.

On Wednesday they were due to listen to another former PASOK minister, Vasso Papandreou, but her arrival at their office was canceled as Peponis and Mouzakitis decided to stop investigating the case and forward it to the prosecutor of the Supreme Court so that it reaches the Parliament in relation to the law about the responsibility of ministers. This is due to the likely implication of political figures.

Besides Vasso Papandreou, former government officials Giorgos Zannias and Petros Christodoulou had been due to testify.
