Hotline for abused women receives over 10,000 calls

Since its launch two years ago, the 15900 support hotline for women who are victims of violence has received more than 10,000 calls, according to figures presented in Parliament on Friday – International Women’s Day – by Alternate Interior Minister Haralambos Athanassiou.

Of 10,020 calls, 7,909 were made to report instances of domestic abuse, with 5,874 made by the victims themselves and 2,035 by friends or relatives of the victims.

Over 2,100 calls were made by callers requesting advice, while the service also responded to 71 e-mails.

The hotline further processed 23 calls regarding women who were victims of trafficking.
