Five arrested on Greek-Turkish border

Greek authorities have arrested five foreign nationals from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany on the Greek-Turkish border on charges of illegally entering a restricted border area. The five said they were merely seeking to photograph frogs.

The two Dutch men, aged 37 and 24, two Belgians aged 32 and 24 and a 29-year-old German woman were arrested Wednesday morning after being spotted near the border by the Evros River in northeastern Greece, police said in a statement.

The sensitive region is a favored route for illegal migration, used by thousands of migrants seeking to enter the European Union without visas.

East Macedonia and Thrace police spokesman Anastasios Tsiplakis said the five told police they were in the area to photograph a rare species of frog. [AP]
