Interior, tourism ministers to Santorini to check power problems

Interior Minister Yiannis Michelakis and Tourism Minister Olga Kefaloyianni were due on Santorini on Friday for a briefing on the ongoing problems with the electricity supply to the southern Aegean island following a fire at a local power station on Tuesday.

“The restoration [of power] is progressing very well,» Michelakis told reporters ahead of his departure.

The island’s mayor Anastasios-Nikolaos Zorzos had appealed on Thursday for «a minister» to visit the island to oversee the restoration of the electricity supply to the island which is expecting a record number of tourists this year, possibly in excess of 1.9 million. It remained unclear whether Zorzos would proceed with a threat to sue the Public Power Corporation over the blackout.

The PPC insisted on Friday that there was «no problem» with reports indicating that all but 10 percent of the island had been restored with power.
