Rail link to Alexandroupoli Port gets go-ahead

The company in charge infrastructure projects for the Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) on Friday announced that an agreement has been signed to link the port of Alexandroupoli in northeastern Greece to the national rail network, facilitating the transport of cargo, especially to Bulgaria.

Ergose said the project has been budgeted at 3.1 million euros and is scheduled for completion in one years’ time.

The link is expected to significantly improve the movement of cargo from the northern Greek port via the main OSE terminal in the northeastern border town of Alexandroupoli.

The benefits will be greatest for cargo headed to neighboring Bulgaria, which is currently shipped through the Bosporus Strait to the Black Sea port of Varna, a major transport hub for goods destined for the European Union.

According to experts it will take an average of six hours to get cargo from Alexandroupoli port to Varna by rail, as opposed to the two-and-a-half days that it currently takes for shipments made via the Bosporus Strait.
