Former Greek Defense Ministry official to be tried for graft
Magistrate Spyros Georgouleas on Friday brought charges of graft and money laundering against a former general secretary for procurements at the Defense Ministry, Antonios Kantas, who is alleged to have accepted 500,000 euros from German electronics and engineering giant Siemens in connection with a Greek program for the modernization of the armed forces’ telecommunications system in 2000.
The payment is alleged to have been made into a Swiss bank account in Kantas’s name.
The suspect was given an extension until Monday to prepare his defense and is to remain in custody until then.
