Seizing opportunity

A recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) detailing a series of structural changes that Greece needs to adopt in order to trigger growth should not be allowed to go to waste.

The minister responsible for these changes has shown that he is not afraid of the political cost of unpopular decisions and that he is ready to take on the special interests that have previously blocked any changes in order to get the job done.

The question is whether the rest of the government is ready to forge ahead with what needs to be done to give the country a real chance of recovery. That remains to be seen, because it is not enough for reforms to be put on paper in the form of a law or an amendment. What we need is for these laws and changes to be supported on a political and a public level by all of the coalition government’s main officials.
