Athens University senate seeks end to strike

A protracted strike by Athens University’s administrative staff appeared to be petering out following nearly three months of action on Tuesday after the institution’s senate ruled that classes should resume next Monday to ensure thousands of students do not lose the semester.

The smooth implementation of the senate’s decision will depend on a number of factors, chiefly on whether the administrative employees are willing to comply, which is to be decided during a meeting on Wednesday, but also on the stance of left-leaning students who have occupied university faculties during the strike. According to sources, tensions are growing within the camps of administrative staff and students, with some in favor of the strike continuing and others opposing it.
