New Democracy asks Tsipras to clarify whether he is an atheist

New Democracy has demanded that SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras informs the public about his religious beliefs after one of the leftist party’s officials claimed the politician is an atheist.

“The Greek public must know what Mr Tsipras believes,” said New Democracy in a statement on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, SYRIZA’s spokesman for religious affairs, Yiannis Amanatidis revealed on Skai TV that Tsipras did not believe in God.

New Democracy noted in its statement that SYRIZA intends to tax Orthodox Christians to fund the Church of Greece. “We hope his hostility to Orthodox Christians is not a result of Mr Tsipras being an atheist,” added the conservative party.

However, speaking on Monday morning Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakos said he was “not interested” in whether Tsipras was an atheist or not.
