Luqman Shehzad’s killers sentenced to life in prison
An Athens court Tuesday sentenced two Greek men to life in prison for murdering Luqman Shehzad, a 27-year-old Pakistani national, in Athens last year.
Judges said there were no extenuating circumstances that could lessen the sentence.
Christos Steriopoulos, 29, and Dionysis Liakopoulos, 25, were found guilty of murder and the illegal possession and use of a weapon.
Despite a prosecutor’s recommendation last week, judges Tuesday stopped short of describing the killing as “racially motivated.”
Luqman was attacked and stabbed seven times in Petralona, south of the city center, on January 17, 2013, as he was cycling to his place of work. Steriopoulos and Liakopoulos were immediately arrested and confessed to their crime. They denied the incident was racially motivated or that they were affiliated to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party.
