Greek coast guard picks up 77 migrants off Myconos

Authorities in Greece say 77 migrants trying to enter the country illegally have been detained off the Aegean island of Myconos.

The migrants – 53 men, 12 women and 12 children – were picked up Friday by a coast guard vessel and transferred to the island’s main port.

Reports said police had arrested another 56 undocumented migrants on the island.

No information was immediately available on the migrants’ nationalities.

Greece is a major entry point for people, mostly from war-ravaged countries in the Middle East and Africa, seeking a better life in the European Union. They typically pay smuggling gangs to clandestinely ferry them to the Greek islands, frequently risking their lives in unseaworthy craft.
