Internet penetration rates soar across country

Penetration of information technology continues to increase in Greece, as Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) figures on Tuesday showed a significant rise in the number of Greek households with a Web connection and in the portion of the population that systematically use computers and the Internet.

The ELSTAT data showed that 66 percent of Greek households had Internet access in the first quarter of this year, which is 10 percentage points more than a year earlier. Out of those households 98.6 percent have access to broadband Internet.

The biggest increase in Internet access was seen in households on the Aegean islands and Crete, where penetration soared by almost 20 percentage points, from 47.6 percent last year to 66.3 percent this year. The smallest growth, by just over two percentage points, was in Attica, from 68.9 percent to 71.1 percent.

The data also showed that 63 percent of people aged between 16 and 74 years have made use of computers and the Internet this year, with the biggest growth seen in the 65-74 years group, while 58.4 percent of Greek citizens have used mobile Internet this year, up from 44.7 percent last year.
