Samaras hails positive economic data, declares ‘Greece is back’

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed statistical data released on Friday showing that Greece has exited a six-year recession, claiming that his government’s pledges of growth had been realized and declaring that “Greece is back.”

“We promised you that the country would emerge from the tunnel of the great depression,” he said. “This is now a reality, Greece’s return to growth is a fact,” he said, citing the publication by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) of non-seasonally adjusted figures showing that gross domestic product grew by 1.7 percent in the third quarter of this year, compared to the same period of 2013.

In an apparent dig at lefist SYRIZA, which is gaining in opinion polls, Samaras remarked that those who had doubted the prospects for growth had been “spectacularly contradicted.”

The premier added that “growth will continue at even faster rates,” adding that the country was recovering despite efforts by those trying to profiteer at the country’s expense.
