Eurogroup statement rejected by Greek officials from start, says Athens
Greek officials did not agree to sign a joint statement following Wednesday’s Eurogroup meeting in Brussels because of the draft’s wording, government spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis said speaking on several local medial outlets on Thursday.
According to the Greek government spokesman, right from the start Greece did not agree to sign the document which referred to an extension for the completion of the current bailout program, after a meeting of eurozone finance ministers failed to reach a decision regarding the Greek financial assistance program which runs out at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, a report in the Financial Times referred to a leaked Eurogroup statement on Greece which Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis allegedly agreed to initially, before it was rejected by Athens.
Commenting directly on the story on his Twitter account, Varoufakis suggested to the article’s author to “refrain from dubious claims based on even more dubious leaks.”
Sakellaridis insisted that Greece’s delegation at the Eurogroup, which included Deputy Prime Minister Yiannis Dragasakis, had reservations about the draft statement and discussed these with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who was also unhappy about the wording.
