SDOE to receive more power to go after tax evaders
The government is preparing legislation to give the Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) greater powers so it can impose penalties on tax evaders, while also offering suspects incentives to pay off their debts quickly, Kathimerini understands.
Alternate Minister for Combatting Corruption Panayiotis Nikoloudis believes that the government can quickly raise some 2.5 billion euros in revenue by targeting 3,500 tax evaders (businesses and individuals) who have already been identified by SDOE but who have not yet been issued with penalties by tax offices.
The new law would allow SDOE to issue the penalties directly.
