Bank robber and suspected anarchist released from prison

Simos Seisidis, a bank robber with alleged anarchist links who had his leg amputated after being shot by police, was released from prison on Monday.

Seisidis was arrested late on Friday in connection with an old case relating to an armed robbery in Nea Halkidona, northeastern Athens, in 2000.

Seisidis had been convicted of the robbery in absentia and was sentenced to five years in prison.

However, Seisidis had already spent two years in pretrial custody between May 2010 and May 2012.

Judicial authorities decided on Monday that those two years could be considered time served and that Seisidis could buy out the remainder of his sentence.
