To Potami chief pledges to back government over deal

To Potami would back a SYRIZA-led government in the event that a deal with foreign lenders was turned down by radical leftist MPs inside the party, Stavros Theodorakis told Kathimerini on Sunday, adding that his centrist party is willing to help Alexis Tsipras’s administration in ongoing negotiations.

“If [Tsipras] realized the need to select centrist, open-minded figures and if he made the necessary reforms a top priority of his government then, yes, I would not refuse my support,” said Theodorakis.

The former journalist also said that the leader of Independent Greeks, and Tsipras’s coalition partner, Panos Kammenos is a “far-right obscurantist.”

Theodorakis reiterated his skepticism of a possible referendum, adding that if the prime minister were to call early elections those should be held using simple proportional representation.
