New Democracy will win the upcoming snap elections, conservative party chief Evangelos Meimarakis predicted Monday, while warning Greek voters against casting a so-called “protest vote.”
“The protest vote is not a solution. Many voted [for SYRIZA] thinking that they would thus punish the great New Democracy party,” Meimarakis said during a campaign visit in the Aitolokarnania district, in western Greece, ahead of elections September 20.
“They ended up paying an extra 90 billion euros,” he said in reference to the third international bailout signed by Greece's leftist-led government.
Several opinion polls released over the weekend predicted a close race and no overall majority in a parliament even more fractured than the previous one.
