Coast guard, ferry rescue 61 migrants off Lesvos

Coast guard and Blue Star 1 ferry on Monday rescued 61 undocumented migrants after their boat capsized in the sea area between the islands of Lesvos and Chios, in the eastern Aegean.

Meanwhile on Monday morning, the Eleftherios Venizelos ferry unloaded nearly 2,500 migrants at the port of Piraeus, bringing the total number of people moved to the mainland since last Monday to more than 15,000. Thousands more are waiting to be identified and ferried to Athens to continue their trip to other European countries.

Athens sent troops and police reinforcements Sunday to Lesvos following fresh clashes between police and migrants.

Earlier police arrested two teenagers for hurling homemade petrol bombs at tents set up by refugees, injuring a 30-year-old Syrian man.
