Holiday getaway on Greek wish lists

Many Greeks looking to get away this Christmas or New Year’s are mulling the idea of heading to a European capital, as London, Paris and Rome are the top three choices for online searches at travel information website Trivago.

The site published the top preferences by Greece-based users for the December 24-26 and December 29-January 2 periods, with London, Paris, Rome, Athens and Vienna being the most popular destinations for Christmas, while Paris, London, Rome, Prague and Vienna lead the New Year’s chart.

The Trivago survey on searches that included only domestic destinations showed that, for Christmas, Greeks are thinking about Athens, Thessaloniki, Arachova, Pilio, Metsovo and Ioannina, for an average of four days. For New Year’s there is a slight shift, in that Greeks are considering Thessaloniki first, then Athens, Arachova, Pilio, Ioannina and Kastoria, with an average stay of five days for Athens, three for Ioannina and four for the other destinations.

Notably, Athens also features in the list of the top 50 destinations among Trivago users around the world for Christmas as well as New Year’s. The results concern online searches this year from January 1 to November 30.
