New game in town

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is no longer the only game in town. The recent election of Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the helm of New Democracy means that we finally have a stronger opposition.

As time passes, Tsipras will be faced with growing dissent and the burden of unfulfilled promises. He is trying to balance between two different boats – as exemplified by the government’s stance on the Skouries gold mine as it tries to meet the country’s bailout commitments to lenders. If experience is any guide, Tsipras risks getting his feet wet. You cannot attract and push away investors both at the same time. You only risk damaging your credibility.

Mitsotakis has no reason to hurry but he can’t afford to just wait for the government to fall. Greece needs a structured, modern opposition with new faces. What it does not need is false or over-the-top statements. The voters who are prepared to embrace such a political project expand well beyond the traditional catchment area of ND.
