Olympiakos clinches volleyball’s Greek Cup in style

Olympiakos landed its record 15th Greek Cup on Sunday to add it to the League Cup “Nikos Samaras” it won earlier this season, as it seeks to recover the reins of Greek volleyball from PAOK.

While the final on Sunday was a rather forgettable affair, as Olympiakos dismissed Kifissia 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-22) in less than an hour-and-a-half, it was the semifinals a day earlier that were truly remarkable.

Coached by Italian Roberto Piazza, Olympiakos amazingly came back on Saturday from two sets down and a 24-21 advantage for PAOK in the third set to win 3-2 in a game that lasted almost two-and-a-half hours.

In the other semi, Kifissia fought back from a 2-1 set deficit to win 3-2, although its 15-13 win in the tie-break came from a highly controversial referee call on the final point.

Olympiakos’s central blocker Dimitris Soultanopoulos was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Final Four that took place at Glyfada, southern Athens.
