Aristides Alafouzos, owner of Kathimerini, dies

Kathimerini owner Aristides Alafouzos has died. He was 93.

Alafouzos was born on the Aegean island of Santorini in 1924. He qualified as a civil engineer in 1949. He founded his own construction company in 1956, before entering the shipping industry in 1964. During the military dictatorship in Greece he moved to London, where he stayed until 1988.

He also bought Kathimerini in 1988, transforming it into one of Greece's leading publications.

In December 2015 he was awarded the “Lloyd’s List/Propeller Club Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Lloyd's List Greek Shipping Awards.

He has also been honored with the “Order of the Rising Sun” by the Emperor of Japan for his distinctive service to the Asian country, and with the honorary title of “Friendship Ambassador” by the Chinese government.

He leaves two sons, Yannis and Themistocles and seven grandchildren.
