ATHEX: Schaeuble’s optimism rubs off on stock market

The optimism expressed by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble about a solution to the Greek conundrum at Thursday’s Eurogroup meeting sent the Greek bourse benchmark mighty close to the 800-point level at Tuesday’s close. The return of confidence in the market was also reflected in the daily trading volume, which cleared 100 million euros.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 797.13 points, adding 1.60 percent to Monday’s 784.60 points. The large-cap FTSE 25 index expanded 1.69 percent to 2,114.67 points.

Banks outperformed, with their index jumping 5.43 percent. Piraeus rose 7.98 percent, Eurobank ascended 6.62 percent and National earned 5.76 percent. Mid-cap Attica Bank enjoyed a 14.02 percent increase.

In total 60 stocks posted gains, 42 took losses and 23 ended unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 102.5 million euros, up from Monday’s 46 million.

In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange declined 0.24 percent to 76.14 points.
