Noor 1 convict attempts suicide in psychiatric hospital

Efthimis Yiannousakis, a former shipowner convicted to life in prison in connection with the Noor 1 heroin smuggling case, attempted suicide shortly after his transfer to Attica's Dafni psychiatric hospital, his lawyer claimed on Sunday.

Yiannousakis had been under armed guard at the hospital when he tried to kill himself, according to the convict's lawyer, Yiannis Glykas, who said his client was transferred from the psychiatric clinic of Korydallos Prison to Dafni hospital last Friday.

According to Glykas, guards found Yiannousakis using a beam of wood to try and inflict harm upon himself.

The convict had alleged that he came under pressure by Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos and by others to implicate shipowner and businessman Vangelis Marinakis in the Noor 1 heroin smuggling affair.

However those claims were probed by prosecutor Panagiotis Brakoumatsos and subsequently shelved.

Meanwhile a Piraeus court recently rejected an appeal for early release made by Yiannousakis who claimed that both he and his family remain at risk while he is in prison.
