State of stupor

The upcoming European Parliament, regional and local elections are important on many different levels. They are nevertheless not more significant than the escalating threats against the country’s national sovereignty.

While the Greek political system is caught up in pre-election fever and increasing partisan polarization, Turkey is busy rolling out an expansionist strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The reflexes of Athens’ foreign policy appear to be in a state of stupor. The alarm should have already gone off with the announcement of Turkey’s plans for offshore drilling operations in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.

The Greek government must waste no time in taking steps to contain the risk posed by Ankara’s unfolding policies.
