Pyatt: Acts of ‘hooliganism’ harm Athens’ image
US Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt has expressed his confidence that Greek police will investigate an early Wednesday vandal attack by self-styled anarchists on his residence in Athens.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 7th annual Hellenic Air Force Academy (HAFA) Air Power Conference Wednesday, Pyatt thanked Greece’s foreign and defense ministers for expressing their support over the incident. However, he cautioned that such “acts of hooliganism” undermine Athens’ image as a tourism and investment destination.
Pyatt had earlier tweeted that the paint attack, carried out by members of Rouvikonas (Greek for Rubicon) anti-establishment group in solidarity with jailed terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas, was “childing vandalism” and that he would work with Greek authorities “to punish the culprits according to law.”
“Destruction of property is not peaceful protest,” he said.
Opposition New Democracy and To Potami centrists condemned the incident.
