The pilot of a single-engine plane was slightly injured on Monday morning after his aircraft crashed into a village square in the region of Serres, northern Greece, causing damage to buildings but no one else was hurt.

The 19-year-old had been flying the Cessna for some time at a low altitude over the village of Proti when one of the plane’s wings hit a tall tree, according to a report by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), which said that the teen lost control of the plane and plunged into the square.

He was transferred to the General Hospital of Serres to receive treatment for light injuries, the report said, adding that the square had been relatively empty when the incident occurred.

Stelios Frastanlis, the mayor of Amphipolis – the municipality to which Proti belongs – told ANA-MPA that the young pilot is from the village and that there is no intention on the part of the municipality to press charges.
