Wait-and-see approach adopted vis-à-vis Ankara by Athens

Against the backdrop of the possibility for a resumption of exploratory contacts with Ankara in January, Athens is taking a wait-and-see stance.

Turkey’s navigational advisory on Tuesday for six months of research by the Oruc Reis in the Gulf of Antalya – a region unlikely to lead to any dispute with Greece – as well as recent messages sent out by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to appease the West, appear to have created an environment conducive to de-escalation.

Athens wants this to last, and for Turkey to desist from infringing on Greek sovereign rights, as was the case on Wednesday, when a pair of Turkish fighter jets flew over the islet of Anthropofagous as Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos and the head of the armed forces, Konstantinos Floros, were touring the northeastern Aegean.

Overflights were also recorded on Monday, in the area of Oinousses and Panagia in the eastern Aegean.
