Doctor snatched from his home in Varkiza

Four armed men snatched a 51-year-old doctor from his home in the southern Athens suburb of Varkiza late on Thursday after tying up his wife and two young children. Officers were informed at about 4 a.m. yesterday when the man’s wife managed to untie herself and call the police. A few hours later, two of the family’s cars were found destroyed. One burned vehicle was abandoned in Varkiza and the other in Ekali, northern Athens. The kidnappers also stole jewelry, electrical goods and fur coats from the house. One of the suspects kept guard outside the house and communicated with the others in Russian via a walkie-talkie. Police have asked the family’s Georgian maid, who was on a four-day leave in her homeland, to return to Greece immediately. The kidnappers had not made any contact with the family by last night.
