Border guards rescue migrants lost in snow

A group of Albanian migrants who got lost in fog trying to cross into Greece on Sunday and were rescued from the snowy slopes of a mountain by border guards were yesterday in good health, according to doctors in Kastoria. One of the migrants, a pregnant woman, remained in hospital for observation but the rest, who had all suffered frostbite, were discharged. «If the police had come one hour later we would have been dead,» a 23-year-old migrant told Kathimerini. «The children were so cold they couldn’t speak,» he said, referring to two minors in the group. The migrants crossed the border with the aim of reaching Kastoria. After hours of trudging through deep snow in temperatures of -10 Celsius, one migrant used his cellphone to call a relative in Halkidiki who alerted authorities. Police found the migrants huddled under a tree on the slopes of the Mali Madi mountain several hours later.
