Diaspora press effort honored

Magazines often become central forums for Greek communities of the disapora, avenues through which members can express various ideas, tendencies and opinions on matters relevant to them. The magazines published by Greeks living in Sweden – Immigrant News, News of the Community and Hellenism of the North – have done exactly that during their laudable existence since the mid-1970s. A short time ago, the Union of Greek Societies and Communities of Sweden (UGSCS) honored the press of Greeks in Sweden in the presence of Panos Sobolos, president of ESYEA, the Athens Journalists Union, and its former vice president, Fani Petralia. During the ceremony a special edition was presented, «25 + 1 Years with the Magazine of Greeks in Sweden,» which was produced by Xenophon Pagalias and Costas Koukoulis. In this special edition, readers can find a detailed account of the press of Greeks living abroad, which serves to highlight its importance for Greece’s diaspora. Extensive information is also available on the history of the three aforementioned magazines which, in fact, are one and the same; the magazine has at times been published under these three different names and has been in constant circulation since 1976, counting 320 issues to date. Material from these issues is included in the special edition. It includes features on many prominent individuals of Greece’s past and present intellectual and cultural life. These include Nikos Svoronos, Manolis Anagnostakis, Mikis Theodorakis, Domna Samiou, Costas Gavroglou, Yiannis Markopoulos, Maria Farandouri and others. Other noteworthy features in these extracts include a historic photograph of Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis among the Greeks of Sweden.
