Cinema festival turns 44

A cinephile made of papier-mache goes fishing in the Thermaic Gulf. His findings? A piece of celluloid. Designed by pop artist Tassos Pavlopoulos, this is the poster for the 44th annual Thessaloniki International Film Festival. According to the artist, the inspiration behind it was the «special and multifaceted dialogue developed between the artists and the audience through film.» A graduate of graphics and drawing at the Warsaw Fine Arts Academy where he was a student of acclaimed illustrators such as Henrik Tomaszevsky, Pavlopoulos has won several awards and has participated in exhibitions such as the Warsaw Poster Biennale and the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition. As for the Thessaloniki festival – which will take place from November 21 to 30 – the organizers have announced the following tributes: a retrospective of Georgian filmmaker Otar Iosseliani and a tribute to Chinese director Kar-wai Wong, whose credits include «In the Mood for Love.» On the Greek front, the 44th film festival will feature a retrospective on director Nikos Panayiotopoulos.
