Patra welcomes world-class international musicians

The 28th annual International Festival of Patra, which features international as well as Greek artists, is officially under way and is set to run until the beginning of August. The event, which is organized by the Patra Cultural Organization, began on June 27 with “Jazz + Praxis,” three days of jazz concerts which included a performance by French saxophonist Michel Portal, one of the architects of modern European jazz.

This year marked the 10th “Jazz + Praxis,” which has become an annual staple on the calendars of jazz enthusiasts. During those last 10 years, the city of Patra has hosted many well-known international and local musicians, among them Tomasz Stanko, Lars Danielsson, Chico Freeman, Sheila Jordan, Gunter Sommer, Ed Neumeister, Vassilis Tsabropoulos, George Tradalidis, Sakis Papadimitriou and Sofia Noiti.

This year’s most notable performances included those by Groovin High, the Nikolas Anadolis Trio, Stavros Lantsias & Krotala, and that of Portal and Vincent Peirani, which marked the finale of “Jazz+Praxis.” The two musicians’ unusual mix of contemporary jazz, popular French music and even tango melodies pleasantly surprised the audience.

The International Festival of Patra will continue until August 8 and will feature a plethora of distinguished musicians, films and theater works. For more information, visit www.festivalpatras.gr.
