Hipster diva Lana del Rey plays Athens for one night

Polarizing star Lana del Rey will take the stage at around 10 p.m. on Monday at the Rockwave Festival in Athens, whose lineup also features legendary British post-punk band Echo and the Bunnymen.

Famous for her urban-hipster-meets-Americana music videos and voluptuous lips, del Rey, born Lizzy Grant, was catapulted to global stardom in the summer of 2011 after the music video for her song “Video Games” went viral on YouTube, collecting more than 2 million hits in five months.

Critics have often questioned the New York-born artist’s authenticity, denouncing her as a “ruthless gloom-pop replicant perfected in a record industry laboratory.” But such demeaning comments have failed to discourage fans around the globe. Her debut album “Born to Die” has sold some 3.5 million copies worldwide since its release in January 2012.

Formed in Liverpool in the late 1970s, Ian McCulloch’s legendary band, currently set for the release of its 12th studio album, will take the Terra Vibe stage at 7.45 p.m.
