Olympic inspiration in modern Greek art

An important group show, acting as a panorama of contemporary Greek art, will be inaugurated at the recently established Hania Municipal Gallery this Friday. Under the title «The Olympic Spirit and Contemporary Greek Art,» the show includes works by 57 contemporary Greek artists. Going on display are 75 works, including paintings, sculptures, engravings, digital photography and video installations. In most of the works – some of which were created exclusively for this show – the artists’ search for the Olympic spirit of today becomes the subject matter. On exhibition will be works by artists Nikos Alexiou, Alexis Verouka, Manolis Zacharioudakis, Petros Zoumboulakis, Opi Zouni, Kyriakos Katzourakis, Giorgos Lazongas, Yiannis Lasithiotakis, Michalis Manousakis, Tassos Manjavinos, Marios Spiliotopoulos, Panayiotis Tetsis, Yiannis Tsarouchis, Costas Tsoklis, Alekos Fasianos, Manolis Haros and Yiannis Psychopedis, among others. The show is curated by art critic and journalist Peggy Kounenaki. The Hania Municipal Gallery was chosen as the exhibition’s first stop, before it moves on to the Thessaloniki State Museum of Modern Art. It will then travel to Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games. In Hania, the show runs to August 31.
