The culprit

Petros Markaris, born in Istanbul in 1937, has had a distinguished career as a playwright, author of screenplays for film and television, and translator – most recently of Goethe’s «Faust.» He is also a Brecht scholar and teaches theater studies at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki. Yet he is probably best known in Greece and abroad for his screenplays for the «Anatomy of a Crime» series and his popular crime fiction featuring homicide squad chief Costas Haritos, the Greek incarnation of the hard-boiled cop. Markaris is published in Greece by Gavriilidis. His first two novels, «Night Bulletin» (1995) and «Zone Defense» (1998) have been translated into German, French, Italian, Spanish and Turkish, and are soon to come out in English (Harvill Press) and Portuguese. «Night Bulletin» is in its seventh edition in Greek and «Zone Defense» is in its fifth. The third in the series, «Che Committed Suicide,» has just been launched.
